is off tonight. police swarmed a neighborhood in springfield just off the fairfax county parkway. a man was found shot in his house there. john has the latest from police. john? >> reporter: good evening. a sad story indeed. authorities kept us away from the scene. it's down at the bottom of the hill. they say it is still an active investigation. police said around 6:00 tonight, they got the report that a man was found shot. now, they had to wait for a search warrant to come. around 9:00 this evening, detectives as well as crime scene investigators were allowed to reenter the home, gathering evidence, talking to family members. not much information was released by authorities, many in the quiet neighborhood are rattled. while police blanketed the streets, guns drawn, residents were told to go inside until the area was secured. >> we weren't sure what was going on. it's certainly not something we see here every day. >> reporter: police say tuesday evening around 6:00 they arrived in springfield to find 75-year-old gary hanson dead in his home. >> i knew his wife a little bit better. she

of a developing news out of fairfax county tonight. an elderly man was shot and killed and the gun man is still on the run. will thomas is live in the neighborhood. what happened? >> reporter: just a short time ago, fairfax county police released the name of the victim, and he was just shy of his 76th birthday. his name, gary hansen. a law enforcement source tells fox 5 he was shot in the face and a machine gun was found at the scene. the call went out about 6:00. when police arrived, mr. hanson was already dead inside his home along chancellor way, and the gun man was long gone. they entered about 9:15 waiting on a search warrant. earlier, police canvassed the area with guns drawn not knowing if the shooter was still around. neighbors and people arriving rushed inside by police. here's more. >> so i pulled up. i see these policemen with these long guns, these shot guns and it scared me. i thought, what's happening? >> reporter: and an all points bulletin has been issued by fairfax county police to regional law enforcement and most likely beyond. at this point, fairfax county police haven't det

for hours in both directions between interstate 66 and route 7. brianne carter joins us from fairfax with the latest. >> traffic is moving is the good news. it would've been headaches with the back up from earlier this morning had continued. the inner loop and outer loop are moving at this hour. the lane 7 reopened after being shut down several hours earlier this morning. we understand from officials that a construction crew working on the hot lanes project had a crane that somehow interacted with a power pole, pulling down the power lines. virginia dominion power crews were quickly called in and were here for hours working to remove power lines from the roadway a to get them lifted back up so that they could reopen the lanes. virginia dominion power says, they have been working to get the power restored for the customers affected by this. about 180 customers were affected. at this point they have a temporary fix on this power line and they will come back at another time to get a permanent fix so they don't impact rush- hour any more. the good news is the outer loop and the inner loo
